These gentle walking sessions are designed for adults living on the Isle of Sheppey who are experiencing lowered wellbeing, managing physical or mental health conditions, or who may feel lonely and isolated. Set against the wild beauty of Elmley's vast skies and peaceful landscapes, the programme provides a nurturing space to simply be - to pause, breathe, and enjoy the positive power of nature.
Each six-week programme invites participants from Sheppey to explore the Reserve through guided walks. It's not about fitness or fast pace - it's about taking time, reconnecting with the natural world, and experiencing moments of calm.
We're now halfway through our second Wilder Wellbeing programme here at Elmley and we're pleased to have three more booked, with programmes running in September 2025, and April and September 2026.
Spending time in nature is increasingly recognised as essential for our wellbeing. Being immersed in nature and wildlife has a deeply restorative effect on both mind and body. As awareness around mental and physical wellbeing continues to grow, so too does the understanding that nature plays a powerful role in our ability to heal, connect, and feel well. This is where nature-based initiatives, including green prescribing, are becoming an important part of a more holistic approach to health.
Green prescribing involves referring people to nature-focused activities and time outdoors as a way to improve mental health and wellbeing. It's supported by growing evidence that regular time in natural environments can reduce stress, alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, and create a greater sense of calm and connection.
At Elmley, we've seen first-hand the impact that being in nature can have, whether it's through a quiet walk on the Reserve, spotting wildlife, or simply enjoying the stillness of wide open skies. Through our Wilder Wellbeing partnership with Kent Wildlife Trust, we're proud to be helping the local community access the benefits of time spent outdoors. We care about the power of nature to support wellbeing and the importance of making the Reserve accessible to the local community of Sheppey.
We're so grateful to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for helping make this possible, and to Kent Wildlife Trust for bringing their thoughtful approach and warm guidance to these special sessions.
